The Basic Supplies You need For Painting

You may have thought that one of the things you need in order to get started painting is “talent,” but actually – as long as you have the proper supplies for getting started painting – you can have a lot of fun painting (and can even sometimes paint something that is halfway decent!) without any real talent at all! Once you have gotten all the necessary supplies for painting, you will be able to sit down (perhaps in the park, with a beret on your head!) and just have fun with the canvas – seeing what comes of your experiment.

The cost of canvases will certainly not break the bank for you, and of course, canvases will be important, as you will need something to paint on; look for canvases that are of a moderate size at first, as it is unlikely you will want to display your early paintings, but you will probably not want to throw them out, either, and smaller canvases will be easier to store.

A set of paintbrushes that gives you a lot of options will be a definite must, as you will have fun experimenting with the effects of different brushes as you get started with your painting; take the time to shop around a bit, and find good deals on great brushes (this great set is only 8 dollars on Amazon).
And of course, paint will be an important thing for you to have if you want to start painting, and if you are a beginner painter, acrylic paints will be the best route for you to go; the Reeves Acrylic Paint Set is a highly-regarded set of acrylic paints, and they are priced extremely reasonably, especially for those who are just getting started with painting!

Once you have made sure to stock up on all these basic supplies, the only thing you will be missing is some old clothes (which will be necessary, so that you do not ruin any of your good clothes with wet paint!) and a pleasant day when you can go outside and have a bit of fun splashing paint on a canvas!

How To Throw Pottery

You must have spent a significant amount of money purchasing pots that you can use as decoration if you are a fan of pottery, or even that you can use for practical purposes such as plants in your house or storage for different items. Pottery is an excellent way for you to add some character and beauty to your home, and while you probably understand this already, you might not have known that it is not that difficult to throw pottery yourself; in fact, throwing pottery can be a lot of fun, and decorating your home with pots you have thrown yourself will be much more rewarding than decorating it with pots you purchased from someone else.

When you start with your pottery throwing, you should begin with a small piece of clay  and you should spin the wheel at full-speed, keeping the clay wet as you slowly work with your hands to get the clay centered.

Once the clay is centered and shaped so that it is symmetrical all the way around, you can slow the wheel down to about three-quarters speed and make a hole in the center of the clay, using your outstretched fingers; the hole should be right in the center of the clay, and should go all the way down near the bottom.

Finally, you will be able to slow down the pottery wheel and begin shaping the clay; do this by putting light pressure on the inside and outside of the clay as you slowly raise up, which will gradually increase the length of the sides of your pot.

The more you practice, the easier it will become for you to make pots that look the way you want them to look – and of course, the more you work with pottery, the more you will be able to decorate your house with pots that you have made yourself!

Picking Up the Craft of Woodcarving

Do you enjoy working with your hands? If you do, working with wood can be a very relaxing hobby for you. Many people have the wrong concept that you have to invest thousands of dollars into expensive tools to work with wood. Remember not too long ago all woodworking and wood decoration was done by hand. Woodcarving is a skill that anyone can learn. Believe it or not you don’t have to be superbly artistic to carve wood.

There are many different types of carving that can be done on wood. Chip carving is a carving style that anyone who can create a design using a ruler and compass can learn easily. Furthermore, you only need two types of knives to learn to chip carve. Anyone who is old enough to learn to use the knives safely can learn to chip carve with a bit of practice.

Very intricate designs are created from simple geometric patterns in chip carving. A chip knife and a stab knife are the two knives that are required to create beautiful works of art. There are many different types of knives that can be used for chip carving but these are the most used. As for wood you will need to purchase, you want a wood that is good for carving such as basswood. This wood can easily be order online or many craft stores carry it. Basswood is great because it is easily cut with or across the grain of the wood.  Basswood is not only light in color but it is also extremely light weight. You could also consider a wood such as butternut. Butternut is a slightly darker wood then basswood is.

Chip carving can be a starting point for other types of carving such as relief carving and whittling. Woodcarving can also move into other art forms of woodworking such as using a scroll saw to create intricate pictures, wood burning, and woodturning. Woodworking can be a very rewarding art form to enter into.
